July 16, 2010

Algoma Public Health reminds the public that raw milk can be dangerous and warns people not to consume it.

“Raw, unpasteurized milk contains disease-causing organisms such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, and E.coli, commonly found on farms in animal waste. Pasteurization is a heat treatment of milk to kill these microorganisms to prevent diseases. Just as we would not eat a raw hamburger or raw chicken, we don’t drink raw milk,” said Virginia MacEachern , Public Health Inspector at Algoma Public Health.

“Ontario has had the benefit of safe pasteurized milk for almost a century. Unpasteurized milk distribution has been prohibited by law for decades.”
